K-State upsets #8 Florida by kansascitysportsfan.com
Kansas State had a tough task in front of them on Saturday
night. Florida was ranked eighth in the
country with just one loss to a tough Arizona team the weekend before. Ten games into the season and Kansas State
sat at 8-2 only losing to #4 Michigan and #14 Gonzaga. Being played at the Sprint Center in Kansas
City, Missouri made it a home game for the Wildcats.
Two minutes in and the Overland Park native Will Spradling put the Wildcats on top 4-2. Most people thought Kansas State had no chance against Florida, but thus far they were playing with them. At sixteen minutes Spradling knocked down a three to extend the Wildcat lead to four. The local kid was looking to have a big game in his back yard and the crowd covered in purple loved it.
K-State’s lead lasted until the fifteen minute mark in the first half when Florida pulled ahead by one. The Wildcats knew if they could upset Florida they could potentially move into the top 25. Spradling knocked down another three at eleven minutes to tie the game at fourteen. K-State wasn’t going quietly and the local was leading the charge.
With nine minutes to go in the first half the Wildcats were on top 17-16. This wasn’t going to be an automatic win for Florida. Spradling hit another three with seven minutes left in the first. It was now 20-19 with K-State on top.
The Wildcats put together a solid run in the final minutes of the first half and were now leading Florida 33-23 going into halftime. Spradling led all scorers with thirteen first half points. “Upset” was in the air.
Florida came out hot in the second half and with sixteen minutes left in the game they found themselves down only three. The Gators then knocked down two free throws to put them down by one. K-State's ten point halftime lead had disappeared in four minutes.
Angel Rodriguez knocked down a three at fifteen minutes to move the Wildcats lead to four. K-State was giving Florida a tough time and proving that they could compete with any team in the country. No matter the outcome of the game this had to be a confident booster for the Wildcat basketball team.
Every time Florida would get within a point or two of K-State the Wildcats would come back and score to keep the lead. K-State had been leading for most of the thirty minutes played so far. Now with nine minutes left they were up 50-45 after Henriquez made two free throws.
K-State was up by ten points with five minutes to play. Henriquez and Irving had been big off the bench with nine and eight points a piece.
When the buzzer sounded K-State had upset Florida 67-61. The hometown kid Spradling led K-State and all scorers with seventeen points. The Wildcats recorded their biggest win of the year.
